S.T.E.P. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Student Transition & Empowerment Program (STEP)?

STEP is an academic empowerment program designed for selected first-year students to enhance their scholastic and interpersonal growth throughout their duration as undergraduates. Nominated recipients of this incentive-based program are given a jump-start to their scholastic endeavors through academic preparation, career exploration and empowerment services.

How are students selected?

A selection committee will identify and offer eligible students the opportunity to apply for participation in the program.

What are the benefits of participating in STEP?

STEP will provide students with assistance in their transition to college, academic preparation, retention, career exploration and empowerment. Once admitted, students will receive continuous support through various activities and services.

  • Students will be clustered according to their majors and/or interests in creating Study Enhancement Groups. They will be matched with peer mentors who will serve as their social coordinator, tutor, and resident hall advisor –during the summer portion of the program.
  • Students will meet with ODPS professionals on a one-on-one basis, where they will discuss their academic/interpersonal advances and challenges. All STEP students will take the academic skills - UNIV 100 course as a cohort in the Fall semester.
  • Students will benefit from workshops on topics such as, financial aid, leadership skills, study skills, empowerment, and service learning.
  • After completion of their first year in STEP, students will have the opportunity to apply for future STEP mentor positions, for which a stipend will be allotted.
  • Because STEP is a multi-year program, students will establish a wide network of friends, mentors and future associates

Will I have to take summer courses, and receive credit for those classes?

Yes. Students in STEP will earn a total of six college credits during the 5-week summer  program prior to their first year at George Mason University. These 6 credit hours will begin their undergraduate transcripts.

Do I have to pay for the 6 credits during my first summer?

No. Students admitted into STEP will receive the following for the summer portion of STEP including:

  • Tuition expenses
  • On-campus housing
  • Meals
  • Books
  • Educational and cultural trips

Is STEP a residential program?

Yes. Students are required to stay on-campus during the summer portion of the STEP program.
