Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration
Each year the division of University Life convenes a committee to facilitate a campus-wide recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. and his vision of equality in America. This celebration is traditionally marked by a variety of events held all across campus and sponsored by a number of offices and academic departments. The Celebration culminates with an Evening of Reflection, where we present the Spirit of King Awards to an outstanding Student & Faculty/Staff member, enjoy a light reception, and hear the words of a nationally-recognized Keynote Speaker. The 2010 MLK Celebration is tenatively scheduled for
January 26th-28th. Please keep coming back to our site for more information.
2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
The theme for this year's MLK Celebration was Determined: Continuing The Dream and focused on the contributions being made everyday to continue Dr. King's legacy and vision. This year's Evening of Reflection was held January 28th in Dewberry Hall. Our keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III, President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
We are working on improving our site and its content. Come back often for video, pictures and more information about this year's wonderful event.
The Spirit of King Awards
Each year, the Spirit of King Award is given to one Student and one Faculty/Staff member who has made exceptional contributions to the development of a multicultural campus community. The Office of Diversity Programs & Services, as well as the campus-wide committee on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, considers each nomination and the winner is announced at the Annual MLK Jr. Evening of Reflection.
Check back to see photos, video and profiles about this year's winners. Nominations for the 2010 Spirit of King Awards will open next school year in the Fall. Forms will be available from this site once Nominations open up. For more information, please feel free to contact our office directly.
