Shaoxian Yu

Dr. Shaoxian Yu serves as the Associate Director for Asian Pacific American Student and American Indian Student Affairs in the Office of Diversity Programs & Services (ODPS) at GMU.  Shaoxian was born and grew up in Inner Mongolia, China. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1984.

Shaoxian received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Sichuan Foreign Languages Institute, China.  He earned his Master of Arts in Interpersonal Communication, and a Ph.D. in College Student Personnel from Ohio University.

He advises Asian Pacific American student organizations and American Indian/Alaskan Native Student Association.  He coordinates programs and services regarding student success, issues of diversity, and student leadership development.  In addition, he coordinates the annual celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and American Indian/Alaskan Native Heritage Month celebrations at Mason.

Prior to joining the staff of ODPS in 2002, Shaoxian worked as a student affairs professional at Ohio University, the University of Georgia, and Penn State.

In his free time, Shaoxian loves playing basketball with students. He is a basketball "nut".
